Smart Bathroom for Health

Smart Bathroom for Health easily provides personalized health feedback and supports early disease detection.

Early detection

Getting personalized feedback about your health in an easy way; that’s the goal of Smart Bathroom for Health. Using Smart Bathroom technology, health data can be collected. Based on this information, diseases can be detected early and possible (dietary) interventions can be made.

Sensors

The smart toilet contains sensors to measure various body signals in an easy and approachable way. Thus, we can monitor physiological indicators such as blood pressure, hydration status and heart rate for a long time and find individual changes. In this way, you can detect conditions and exacerbation of chronic diseases early. For example, long-term high blood pressure can lead to further cardiovascular disease. Turbidity of urine can be a first indication of disturbances, such as urinary tract infection. And gradual weight loss may go unnoticed but may indicate poor nutrition.

Advanced sensors

In Smart Bathroom, OnePlanet wants to develop a number of advanced sensors for measuring health: integrated in and around the toilet. Possibly expanding to the mirror and other objects found in the bathroom. These sensors will be connected to a digital platform that will interpret this data, recognize trends, predict health problems and provide personalized advice.

Experts from imec, a specialist in high-tech sensors and wearables, are working with nutritionists and doctors from Wageningen University & Research, Radboud University and Radboudumc, to overcome the practical and technological challenges associated with such a groundbreaking innovation. Fundamental to OnePlanet’s vision is ensuring that what is developed makes a clear and measurable difference in real life. Therefore, food, pharmaceutical and technology companies are invited to participate in the innovation process.

Towards personalized feedback

First prototypes of the smart toilet have been successfully tested in volunteers’ homes and with participants of the Nijmegen Four-Day Walk. The next step is to test the smart toilet in nursing homes. There we also want to see if introduction of such a smart toilet can support caregivers in daily care of the residents. In addition, personal feedback can be generated with software and artificial intelligence.
