OnePlanet works on innovative solutions to contribute to a more sustainable and affordable food system. Under the banner “Intelligent Food Processing,” we are developing advanced sensor and digital technologies for the production of protein ingredients from new sources, such as precision fermentation and microalgae cultivation. Our sensor technologies enable real-time process optimization, eliminating the need to wait for laboratory results. This provides the opportunity to efficiently use by-products with variable compositions as nutrients in bioreactors, accelerating the shift from animal to plant-based proteins.

A good example is the REALM project, a large-scale, European-funded initiative. In this project, international knowledge institutions and companies are developing an innovative, sustainable and cost-effective system for cultivating microalgae. OnePlanet plays a crucial role in this by developing new sensors that can monitor the growth and protein production of microalgae in real time. With this sensor data, we create digital twins and predictive models that allow us to automate production and harvesting. This leads to higher quality products, prevents waste and reduces the use of energy and raw materials. Together we are working on a future-proof food system!
