Eating behavior & mood

In the “Eating Behavior & Mood” project, OnePlanet investigates the connection between mood and eating behavior, especially snacking behavior in everyday life, such as during work. In recent years, this was done using the Smart Snack Box. This box allows you to accurately measure what participants eat and drink between meals. Through wearable sensors and short questions on the phone, the link can be made to what people are doing at that moment. This provides many new insights about the effects of eating behavior on stress, health and, for example, alertness during work.

Initial conclusions

The first study found that when stressed in daily life, women generally snack more than men. This had already been established in studies in the lab, but has now been tested in everyday settings. Follow-up research is focused on methods for offering healthy choices at times when people feel like snacking. To this end, OnePlanet is developing a model of eating behavior. By combining this with individual sensor data, researchers and health professionals will gain deeper insights into how eating behavior is related to mood. This is relevant input for personalized health and nutrition advice.

New study

Combined with data from the ingestible sensor pill, OnePlanet can study the relationship between behavior, the brain and the gastrointestinal tract. A new study on this is being prepared. For example, how exactly does stress affect digestion? Thus, OnePlanet is working on person-centered models of one’s own health. This model can be useful for the health, pharmaceutical and food industries, the healthcare sector as well as for individuals.
